Dresden & the Saxon 750mm Lines in 1996

Monday April 8

On April 8 1996 I visited the line that now runs from Frietal Hainsberg to Kurort Kipsdorf. I think this is my favourite of the 750mm gauge Saxon lines I visited. Frietal Hainsberg was a short journey out from Dresden Hauptbahnhof on the 08:30 DB suburban double-deck service. From about Frietal Postchappel signs of the 750mm were visible. However the depot, and thus the start of the action, is found alongside the mainline station at Frietal Hainsberg.

I had expected to catch the 09:20 train but the timetable I had proved to be incorrect. Instead I took the 09:56 service to the end of the line at Kurort Kipsdorf which was hauled by 099 753-6. This enabled me to decide where is was going to travel back to get some lineside shots later in the day. The line has many excellent vantage points so the choice was tough !

Having had to time to have a good look around the station at Kipsdorf, which clearly used to be much busier than it is now, I headed back behind 099 727-0 as far as Rabenau on the 12:16 train. Here I spent a lovely sunny afternoon photographing the passing trains.

With the shadows starting to lengthen I caught the 17:12 service back to Frietal Hainsberg where I changed to the DB standard gauge in to Dresden Hauptbahnhof. From there it was the short walk back to Youth Hostel to put my feet up for the evening !

The next day I ventured a little further out of Dresden.
