I chose to visit the the 750mm lines that were then still owned by DB. I would have liked to have visited some of the other lines shown on the map below but time didn't allow this. As it was I visited the Radebeul-Radeburg, Frietal Hainsberg-Kurort Kipsdorf, Cranzahl-Kurort Oberwiesenthal and the Zittau-Kurort Oybin/Kurort Jonsdorf lines.

The Narrow Gauge Railways of Saxony

Sunday April 7

On April 7 1996 I visited the first of the 750mm railways around Dresden that I had seen. On my way in to Dresden the previous day I had passed through Radebeul Ost were one of the VIIK class 2-10-2 tanks was standing in the station.

As luck would have it when I arrived at Radebeul Ost I found that the normal service train was there behind the normal VIIK however a class I had previously been unaware of was also in traffic. One of the few remaining VIK 0-10-0 tanks 99 713 was hauling a special Easter train.

With my very poor German and a helpful volunteer on the station I managed to find out there were tickets available for the trip. So in the morning mist I travelled in the rear coach to Radeburg.

The train paused for some while at Moritzberg where the children on the train were given Easter Eggs (I think) and service trains passed making use of the three running lines in the station.

Another stop was made at Cunnertswalde after which we made our way to the end of the line. Whilst the special train stayed at Radeburg for some time I made my way back down the line to Friedewald Bad to get some photographs of the trains.

To my surprise I actually managed to walk back to the station before the VIK set off for Radebeul. So I caught this train back saving myself the wait for the next service train.

Before wandering off to take some more shots of the service trains I had a quick look at the static display of locomotives and equipment in the station yard.

I walked as far as the well known level crossing, and site of the first station out of Radebeul, at Weiss Ross. Here the railway crosses the main road and the double track tramway. Once a few of the trains had been photographed I decided to rest my feet and await the next Radebeul bound service. From Radebeul I headed back in to Dresden to get a bit of food and prepare for the next day on narrow gauge activity.

On April 8 I visited another of the lines close to Dresden.
