2003/04 Overhaul Archive - February 2004
February 28 2004A very cold day at Tyseley when sensible people stayed at home and kept warm !
The chassis has been moved in to the workshop over the wheeldrop ready for the rear driving wheels to be refitted once all the bits are ready and the re-tyred wheels have been turned to the correct profile and diameter.

Work was split between the chassis in the workshop and on the other bits down in the shed on turntable road 19. In the shed work continued on rubbing down and painting bits and pieces. However in the cold it was very difficult to paint effectively so most of the work was just rubbing down.

The
old and replacement boiler bands were given a good rub down and were prepared

On the tender the various greasing points on the brake system were checked over and greased. Where necessary the grease nipples were replaced.

The air pump has been largely untouched until now. The cladding has been removed for cleaning up, straightening and a repaint. Meanwhile the pump itself has been given a thorough clean and a partial repaint.

Another chilly day !
The wheels are now in the wheel lathe ready for turning.
Work continued where it had left off the previous weekend checking all the tender axleboxes and pads. It has been decided to replace one or two of the bearings.

And as normal various items from all over the locomotive were prepared for painting such as the regulator handle, vacuum ejector, the two tool boxes from the rear of the tender and yet more brake piping.

The re-tyred rear set of driving wheels are back ! Starting on Monday 16th they will be moved in to the wheel lathe for turning down to the correct height and profile. To ensure the locomotive comes in under the 13' 1" maximum height allowed by Network Rail it is necessary to turn the tyres almost down to scrapping size. But if we don't we don't run, so not much of a choice really !

The re-tyring was undertaken at Doncaster, the new tyres come from South Africa whilst the Gibson Ring is a Swindon product - the old one has been reused. February 14 2004 © Colin Henderson
Mechanical work centred on checking the tender axleboxes, pads etc for any problems. None have been found so far !

Meanwhile with the rear driving wheels back it will not be long before the loco returns to being a 4-6-0. Painting of the rear section of frames normally obscured by the wheels has taken place.

Further injector pipework has been refitted continuing a task of the last few weeks.
The big mechanical job of the day was refitting the inside left hand connecting rod. A little bit of work was required on the little end thrust face before a good fit was ensured.

Most people were involved in work relating to the ongoing task of repainting everything before the loco goes back together. A lot of time was spent attacking the inside of the cab and working on the tender hand rails. The outstanding sanding pipe work was painted as was more brake piping.
