Nothing to report this weekend. Even us 6024 addicts get a break for the festive season !
December 22 2003
The last working party of 2003. The normal pattern of jobs continued. On the painting and preparation side of things several different items got attention. These included the boiler bands, vacuum reservoirs, spring hangers, various bits of pipework and other bits of cladding and platework which are normally not even noticed.
More of the lubrication pipework was reassembled and polished.
Although still a little way off preparations continue for the refitting of the boiler. The bolt holes in the smokebox saddle were cleaned out and the threads retapped.
Meanwhile on the boiler the drivers vacuum brake control was refitted as where the injector steam controls.

During the week the safety valve casting was refitted to the boiler. The other outstanding boiler work would have been completed but the Tyseley compressor was on the blink !

Inside the shed the boiler bands got a lot of attention. Several of the brackets were split from the bands to allow rust treating to take place, after which the bits were primed. Other bands already so treated were rubbed down and given green undercoating.

The tender toolbox locks were given a good polish and put back in their rightful places.
Work on reassembling the lubrication system has continued. This has seen several more pipes annealed and refitted. The copper pipework, always difficult to keep clean when running, has been polished so we can start off with it all looking as we like it !

A lot of time was spent on the fiddly job of refitting cladding around the inside and outside cylinders.

The ashpan has had a bit more work carried out with the back back door being refitted. Work has continued on making this a good fit.

And last but not least the regular jobs of cleaning up and, where necessary painting, this and that continued. Items tackled include the inside connecting rods, the cab spectacle plates, brake piping and suspension components.

A VERY cold day at Tyseley and, perhaps not too surprisingly, only a small turnout.
As has become normal jobs centred on preparing this and that for painting or preparing fittings for re-use.
In addition the cab floor has now largely been refitted and the heavily repaired spark arrestor cage is nearing completion. Work has continued on annealing and refitting lubrication pipework. One final job completed was checking the leading bogie axleboxes. These were pronounced fit for further service.
