January 25 2003 After a few weeks hard work the boiler is all but ready to be lifted from the frames. The support coach will soon be departing for a full C4 overhaul at Lancastrian Carriage & Wagon Works. Many parts have, as can be seen below, been removed, labeled and carefully stored until we need them again. For example today both injectors were removed as was the blowdown valve and other bits of pipe work under the loco to make sure everything is clear to lift the boiler out of the frames very shortly.

Below are a few pictures very kindly supplied by 6024 working party member Colin Henderson who holds the © for the images. Cheers Col !!

Most of the cab fittings have gone. The cab roof and top section of the spectacle plate are ready to be lifted free after which the boiler can follow. January 25 2003

A view of the bottom half of the very empty smokebox. A few tubes have already been removed to allow brief inspection. On the floor of the smokebox from front to back is the steam feed in to the centre steam chest shared by the inside cylinders, the exhuast steam passage from the centre cylinders to the blast pipes (removed), the left the exhaust from the air pump that normally links in to the vacuum ejector exhaust and the exhuast steam passage from the external cylinders to the blast pipes (removed). The two holes in the lower section of the smokebox (one of either side) are the exit points for the steam feed to the external cylinders. Note also all the bolts securing the smokebox to the saddle have been removed. January 25 2003

And the top half of the empty smokebox. From the bottom clearly visible are the four rows flue tubes normally containing the superheater elements, the superheater header with the steam feed pipes removed and the chimney casting with the petticoat removed. Also still with the cover on, between the steam feeds on the header, is the regulator box. January 25 2003

A very clear shot of the centre cylinder casting with the valves in place. The exhaust follows the two raised sections of the casting above the valves to the blast pipes and in to the atmosphere. Also note the oil feed pipes, two on each valve and one per piston. These are feed mechanically from the lubricator on the lefthand running plate (as you see it here). January 25 2003
