Work on the loco was limited to more painting of the boiler and frames. Most of the regulars were away getting an unguided tour of the Midlands on the way to the 2 yearly PTS refresher course. I am happy to report that we all passed and thus are certified insane enough to continue being mainline support crew for the next 2 years at least.

During the week good progress has been made on the firebox work required.

A quiet weekend at Tyseley thanks to the Easter holidays.

Work continued painting the boiler - now on the the barrel. Meanwhile on the chassis Graham Hopes continued painting whilst many bits and pieces are out of the way.

Both inside pistons have been removed and found to be in good condition. Measurement of the bores for ovality and wear will soon take place. The refurbished outside left piston valve was refitted.

No pictures as someone forgot their camera....

The outside valves and pistons had been removed the previous Sunday allowing work to be undertaken on them. Basically at this stage that is de-carbonising and checking all is in order.

Meanwhile outside work focused on the boiler and tender. After much effort the external painting of the firebox in undercoat number 1 was finished. Only another few coats to go now !

On the tender a fair bit of needle gunning and wire brushing took place to prepare for the new coal space to be welded in to position. The front section of the tender was also needle gunned and prepared for painting.

Having all had a weekend off to allow us to continue takeover proceedings at a well known preserved railway it was back to normal on a lovely sunny spring day.

All axles have been non-destructively tested and found to be OK. The lead driving wheels are still out and are currently being prepared for painting. The axleboxes for this wheel set have been remetalled and are just about ready for reassembly.

A little bit of needle gunning has continued on the boiler finishing things off. Once done the boiler is given a final clean up with a powered wire brush then painted. On the firebox sides certain cladding supports have been refitted.

In the smokebox the slow but necessary task of removing all the studs from the superheater header has been finished.

The tender has had the coal space cut out. We are very pleased to have found the internals to be in excellent shape and will require little more than a clean and repaint before the new coal space is welded in to position.

This is the tender water space in excellent condition after 7 years use. Not the slot in the lefthand baffle plate that would have been used for the level indicator when the tender was built. The tank is believed to date from the 1920's. It has certainly lasted well ! Also note John Salter trying to hide from work. April 5 2003 © Colin Henderson

The tender has been moved from turntable road 19 to the workshop for this work to be continued. Professional repairs to the wasted areas of the blast pipe are in hand.
